Love is...ART. St.Valentine's Day Exhibition

Love and art are intertwined so tightly that one could never separate one from the other. Is it not love that inspires the artist to create a sensual image capable of striking a deep chord in the viewer’s heart? From Praxiteles and his divine and at the same time amazingly earthly Aphrodite to ecstatically celestial Botticelli’s Venus and exquisite eroticism of Modigliani, to modern painters who have taken in all the richness of the world’s romantic legacy.

The images of love presented by “Quarta” gallery at “LOVE is…ART” exhibition are diverse but equally touching. They include fine graphic art by Evgeny Rastorguev with his light impressionistic hand, unmistakably giving away the master of the 1960s, as well as his colorful characters from fairy “Gorodets” engaged in vivacious folklore-style flirting.

Artworks by St. Petersburg’s painter Ludmila Nikitina have a mystic air about them, paying tribute to Eros as a mysterious and transcendent spirit. Her Harlequins with their thin faces and enigmatic ladies take us back to the tradition of the medieval miniature and the Paramour cult.

The sensitive work by Leonid Usaytis translates the eternal feeling through the masterful play of light and shadow making us long to penetrate the secret of the mysterious couple hiding from prying eyes.

The eminent Evgeny Bitkin does not stay away from the topic of love either. His romantic canvas is imbued with undisguised tenderness. The master of the Russian landscape contacts Eros quite delicately striving not to convey the movement of his brush but rather the genuine touch of the primordial feeling. Also, the theatre sketches by Inna Mednikova with their extraordinary color palette and airy techniques plunge the viewers into the atmosphere of ‘Fete galante’ with its unstoppable worship of Love.
